Zara Tindall recalls parents’ expectations for riding career
Zara Tindall says her parents expected her to earn success in equestrian sport without special treatment, and described her father, Mark Phillips, as a demanding coach who rarely praised her riding. Speaking on the Talk Horse podcast, she reflected on how that upbringing shaped her career and her approach to raising her own children. Tindall recalled that when she considered pursuing riding professionally, her parents told her she would have to do it properly, receive no help and produce results. She said both understood the demands of the sport, in which they had competed, and did not promise her an advantage because of her family. She described her mother, Princess Anne, as more relaxed about training, while Phillips offered frequent instructions to do more. Tindall said praise from her father was rare and that she kept striving to earn his approval. She called him a tough coach and said she is trying not to be as strict with her own children. Tindall recounted a recent moment when her daughter Mia rolled her eyes after receiving advice.
