Zahara Jolie’s Petition to Drop Pitt Surname Is Granted

A Los Angeles judge granted Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt’s petition to remove Pitt from her legal surname, changing her name to Zahara Marley Jolie, according to a Sept. 28 court order quoted in reporting. The order said there were no objections to the petition and that the decree had been signed and filed. The hearing took place at Los Angeles Superior Court’s Stanley Mosk Courthouse before Judge Virginia Keeny. Zahara’s attorney appeared remotely, according to the account of the court filing. The ruling made official a name Zahara had already used publicly, including at her May graduation from Spelman College and at a sorority induction ceremony in November 2023. Before the hearing, notices of the proposed change appeared in the Los Angeles Daily Journal on June 16, June 23, June 30 and July 7, according to the reporting. The notices provided an opportunity for anyone opposing the petition to submit a written objection. The court order states that none was filed. The decision has drawn competing statements from people speaking on behalf of the two sides.
