Xbox Prioritizes Affordability for Next-Gen Console Amid AI Hardware Costs

Published 28 August 2026

Xbox head Asha Sharma has stated that the gaming industry must innovate on affordability and efficiency for its next-generation console, citing a crisis in hardware component costs driven by AI demand. In an interview with the BBC, Sharma emphasized that rising prices are forcing a shift in strategy for the upcoming console, codenamed Project Helix. Sharma described the current situation as a "Rampocalypse" for the industry, pointing to the soaring cost of components like memory and storage chips. This surge is largely attributed to massive AI datacenter demand, which is competing for the same hardware that powers gaming consoles. "AI is fundamentally changing a lot of things," Sharma said.
