Women journalists allege Delhi Police assault; cops deny

Two freelance women journalists have alleged they were detained and assaulted by Delhi Police personnel inside Saket police station on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while covering a public event in South Delhi. The journalists, Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan, stated they were attempting to question Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta about an alleged cycle scam when police intervened. According to the journalists' accounts, they were subsequently taken to a closed room at the Saket police station, where they claim they were slapped and beaten with sticks by a woman police officer in plain clothes. They also allege that identity and community-based slurs were directed at them, and that the assault intensified after police learned they were Muslim. Videos circulating online purportedly show injury marks on their arms and legs. Delhi Police has rejected the allegations, calling them "factually incorrect and misleading." Police stated that the women were removed from the vicinity of the event because their scooter was obstructing a designated VVIP security route.
