Witcher 3 Expansion Adds Chain Weapon Once Deemed Impossible

Published 12 September 2026

CD Projekt Red is introducing a silver chain weapon for Geralt of Rivia in the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a feature the developer considered but could not implement during the original game's 2015 release due to technological limitations. The weapon will be part of the "Songs of the Past" expansion, which is scheduled for release in 2027. According to Jakub Rokosz, the game director for Songs of the Past, the studio had discussed adding the chain weapon during the development of the original Witcher 3. "We were talking about implementing the chain even during the original Witcher 3," Rokosz said in an interview. "But it was impossible to do at the time for various technological reasons and challenges." He did not specify the exact technical hurdles but indicated they were related to the weapon's animations or physics engine. The technological challenges were addressed during the development of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered, which is set to launch on September 29, 2026. Rokosz explained that the remastering process allowed the team to overcome these issues.
