Witcher 1 Remake Development Paused for Witcher 4

Published 5 September 2026

Development on the remake of the first game in The Witcher series has been placed on hold, with its progress now dependent on the advancement of The Witcher 4. The remake, first announced in 2022, is being developed by Fools Theory under the creative supervision of CD Projekt Red. According to statements provided to GameSpot, the decision to pause the remake is due to production process dependencies. Fools Theory is currently dedicating the majority of its resources to the upcoming The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past expansion, while a smaller portion of the team is assisting CD Projekt Red with The Witcher 4. This division of labor means the remake cannot proceed independently. CD Projekt Red explained that The Witcher Remake will be built on the technological foundation, including necessary assets, tools, and pipelines, being created for The Witcher 4. This integration is intended to streamline development and prevent duplicated effort, particularly as CD Projekt Red transitions its projects to Unreal Engine 5. The Witcher 4 is slated to be the first game in the series to utilize this engine, and the remake will also be built using Unreal Engine 5, benefiting from the new technology.
