Voting held in Nandigram and Rejinagar by-elections
Voters in Nandigram and Rejinagar cast ballots in West Bengal Assembly by-elections on October 6, with counting scheduled for October 9, according to the Election Commission’s timetable. The Nandigram contest follows a change in the opposition arrangement before polling, after a Trinamool Congress faction withdrew its candidate and backed the Congress nominee. No results were available on polling day. Nandigram’s seat became vacant after Suvendu Adhikari won both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 Assembly election and retained Bhabanipur. The by-election is one of two in West Bengal being held in this round, alongside Rejinagar; other by-elections are taking place elsewhere in the country. The Bharatiya Janata Party fielded Hasirani Rath in Nandigram, while Congress candidate Milan Pradhan was backed by the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction. That faction had initially named Sanchita Pradhan Dey, who withdrew before the vote. The candidate change reshaped the opposition lineup. The Communist Party of India and a rival TMC faction also had candidates in the contest. Reports published before polling put the Nandigram field at 16 candidates.
