Volvo Refreshes XC40, Drops EX40 EV in U.S.

Volvo is refreshing its XC40 compact SUV and its all-electric EX40 counterpart with updated styling, technology, and safety features. However, the EX40 will be discontinued in the U.S. market, while continuing to be offered in international markets. The refreshed XC40 is slated to reach U.S. dealerships in early 2028, featuring a B5 mild-hybrid powertrain. This powertrain includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 247 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a small electric motor, achieving an estimated 27 miles per gallon combined. Both the XC40 and the EX40 receive significant exterior revisions, including a redesigned front bumper, headlights, hood, and fenders, along with updated rear styling to create a more contemporary look. The EX40, visually similar to the gasoline XC40, features a flat, body-colored panel where the XC40 has diagonal grille slashes. Inside, both models are upgraded with a new 11.2-inch center display, replacing the previous 9-inch screen. This display runs the latest version of Android Automotive and integrates Google's Gemini AI for vehicle settings and infotainment functions.
