Virginia Elementary Shooting Contained, One Injured

A reported shooting at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, on Wednesday morning prompted a large-scale law enforcement response and a lockdown of the campus. Authorities confirmed the situation was contained and all students, teachers, and staff were safe. The incident began around 9:30 a.m. on September 2, 2026, when scanner traffic indicated a possible shooting at the school, located at 548 Rosser Avenue. This triggered an immediate multi-agency response involving Augusta County deputies, Waynesboro Police, SWAT units, Virginia State Police, and federal agents from the ATF's Washington Field Division. The Augusta County Sheriff's Office served as the lead agency. By 10:15 a.m., the scene was declared contained and secured. During the emergency, students, teachers, and staff were evacuated to a designated staging area. Authorities later directed families to Westminster Presbyterian Church at 1904 Mt. Vernon Street for reunification. As a precautionary measure, all other Waynesboro Public Schools were placed on lockdown, and schools in neighboring Augusta County, specifically in the Wilson and Stuarts Draft areas, were put under a Code Secure protocol.
