US imposes visa restrictions on South Africans over race claims

The United States has imposed new visa restrictions on certain South African nationals, citing what it describes as government-sponsored racial discrimination against white Afrikaners and policies enabling land seizures without compensation. The move, announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday, marks a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between Washington and Pretoria. Rubio stated the restrictions target individuals responsible for, or complicit in, laws or policies that facilitate race-based discrimination, incitement of violence, or uncompensated land confiscation in South Africa. He accused the South African government of "destroying its economy through an obsessive pursuit of racial grievance against the Afrikaner minority." The U.S. did not name any specific individuals affected by the restrictions. U.S. Ambassador to South Africa Leo Brent Bozell III added that the visa restrictions are "only the first step in a series of escalatory measures that will show America's firm resolve in this matter.
