UNICEF India Names Smriti Mandhana Celebrity Advocate

Published 11 October 2026

UNICEF India named cricketer Smriti Mandhana a Celebrity Advocate on October 11, 2026, saying she will support its efforts to advance girls’ rights, health and wellbeing, and opportunities. The announcement coincided with the International Day of the Girl, observed annually on October 11. In the role, Mandhana is expected to help promote equal opportunities for girls and encourage them to learn, play and lead. UNICEF India said the appointment would support its work to empower adolescent girls and help young people reach their potential. The announcement did not detail specific activities or a timetable for Mandhana’s advocacy. Mandhana said her experience growing up playing cricket had shown her the importance of opportunity and encouragement. In a statement announcing the appointment, she said every child and young person should have the chance to pursue their ambitions and fulfil their potential. Cynthia McCaffrey, UNICEF India’s representative, said the organisation looked forward to partnering with Mandhana.
