Duke Students Rally in Support of Jane Doe
Duke University students rallied Thursday in support of Jane Doe, whose civil lawsuit alleges that seven Chi Phi fraternity members sexually assaulted her at Cornell University in October 2024. The gathering was part of a national day of action and included demands for changes to Duke’s response to sexual violence. The lawsuit, filed against Cornell, university leaders, the fraternity and the seven men, alleges that Doe was assaulted at the fraternity house. The accused men deny the allegations and say the encounter was consensual. The supplied reports say none has been criminally charged in connection with the case. The allegations have not been established as a criminally proven event. Duke’s annual security report recorded nine rapes reported on campus in 2025, compared with two in 2024 and three in 2023. The figures count reports and do not indicate how many incidents went unreported. At the rally, student organizers called for the university’s Gender Violence Education and Outreach Office to be more visible and accessible, a consistent and transparent survey process, and administrative support for prevention and awareness work.
