UN Report: World to Exceed 1.5C Warming Limit, Strategy Shifts to Overshoot

The United Nations has acknowledged that the world will soon exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius global warming threshold established by the 2015 Paris climate accord, marking a significant shift in strategy from preventing the breach to managing its consequences. A first-of-its-kind report from the United Nations Environment Programme, released on September 2, 2026, states that Earth is on track to surpass this critical limit within the next few years due to ongoing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. Instead of abandoning the target, the report outlines a new "overshoot" strategy. This approach accepts that temperatures will temporarily rise above 1.5 degrees Celsius before being brought back down through a combination of ending fossil fuel use and deploying carbon removal technologies. "Humanity is speeding past the limit to avoid climate catastrophe," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. "It's a reality check. We have to live with this warmer world," added report co-author Richard Betts, a climate scientist at the University of Exeter. The world is currently at approximately 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, based on a 20-year average.
