UN Estimates 82% of Gaza Structures Damaged

Satellite views of Gaza circulating online show extensive damage across neighborhoods in Rafah, Khan Younis and Gaza City, while a United Nations damage assessment puts the number of affected structures at more than 201,000. The images have been described by users as recently updated Google Maps imagery, but their capture and upload dates, and which areas may have changed, have not been independently established. The UN Satellite Centre, known as UNOSAT, estimated that 201,290 structures, or 82 percent of those in Gaza, had sustained damage by June 16, 2026. It classified 134,422 as destroyed and 13,848 as severely damaged. Those figures come from one UNOSAT assessment and describe the situation as of that date; they do not establish when the imagery now circulating was captured. Across the views, roads cut through blocks where buildings are difficult to distinguish beneath rubble. In Rafah, the Saudi neighbourhood in Tal al-Sultan appears largely flattened, including a housing project with hundreds of units. The former Swedish village also shows extensive damage, with few structures visible.
