UK braces for heavy rain across 88 counties on Wednesday

Published 1 September 2026

The United Kingdom is bracing for widespread heavy rainfall this week, with the Met Office forecasting downpours across 88 counties on Wednesday, September 2. The band of rain is expected to move eastwards from the west, bringing potential travel disruption and following a weekend of thunderstorms and flood alerts. The heaviest rain is predicted for Wednesday morning, peaking between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Weather maps show a large system sweeping in from the Atlantic, initially hitting the western coast of Wales before moving northeast. It is forecast to soak north Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia, and the North of England, where up to 16mm of rain could fall within a single hour at 9 a.m.
