UEFA sanctions Fenerbahce players, club

UEFA has issued bans and fines to Fenerbahce players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, along with sanctions against the club, following disciplinary proceedings initiated after the Champions League playoff match against Lyon in August. The incidents occurred after Fenerbahce secured their place in the Champions League group stage with a 2-1 victory over Lyon, completing a 3-2 aggregate win. Matteo Guendouzi received a four-match suspension from UEFA club competitions, with two games suspended for a one-year probationary period, and a 50,000 fine. Mason Greenwood was handed a one-match ban and a 30,000 fine. Fenerbahce itself was fined a total of 95,000 for lighting and throwing fireworks, crowd disturbances, and team violations of conduct rules. The disciplinary actions stem from provocative behavior and a mass brawl that erupted after the final whistle. Guendouzi was cited for his conduct towards home supporters and opposition players, including making offensive gestures and shouting "Allez OM" (Go Marseille), a club he previously played for. He later stated that Lyon fans had insulted his family throughout the match.
