U.S. rallies to retain Presidents Cup for 11th straight time

The United States won the Presidents Cup 17-13 on Sunday at Medinah Country Club in Illinois, rallying from a three-point deficit to retain the trophy for an 11th consecutive time. The Americans entered the final day’s singles matches trailing the International team 10.5-7.5, then won nine of the 12 matches, according to tournament coverage. Jacob Bridgeman secured the point that clinched the competition, beating Min Woo Lee 1 up after making a short par putt on the 18th hole. The United States needed 15.5 points to win. The final match was halved after the outcome had been decided. The comeback followed three days of team matches in which the Americans had been outplayed, leaving captain Brandt Snedeker to take responsibility for the deficit. The team’s singles lineup produced wins that narrowed and then erased the gap. Jackson Koivun, a 21-year-old rookie, rallied from two down against Si Woo Kim to win 2 up. Collin Morikawa also turned around his match on the back nine. Other U.S. players who won singles matches included Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Chris Gotterup and Patrick Cantlay.
