U.S. Embassy Tracks Suspected Plague Reports in Irkutsk

Published 7 October 2026

The U.S. Embassy in Russia said it is monitoring press reports of a suspected pneumonic plague death and related hospital closures and quarantine measures in the Irkutsk region, while emphasizing that it has not independently confirmed the reports. The State Department’s existing Level 4 travel advisory remains in effect, urging U.S. citizens in Russia to leave and advising against travel there. The embassy’s health alert, issued Tuesday, October 6, said it was tracking developments. It warned that the U.S. government has limited ability to assist Americans in Russia, particularly outside Moscow. The alert did not announce a new travel warning or a change to the advisory, which predates the health reports and cites risks including wrongful detention and security concerns. The suspected case concerns the death of a researcher at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute. Russian authorities told the World Health Organization that her illness began with symptoms typical of an acute respiratory viral infection and that the cause of death had not been established. The reported link to pneumonic plague, including claims of a laboratory accident, remains unconfirmed.
