Two arrested over suspected plot against Manchester Jews

Counter terrorism police in Britain have arrested two men in Manchester on suspicion of plotting an attack targeting the city's Jewish community, an operation announced as Jewish communities prepared to mark Yom Kippur. The arrests took place on Sunday, September 20, on Newton Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter, according to the Metropolitan Police, which is leading the investigation. Both men were detained under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, which allows officers to arrest someone suspected of terrorism without a warrant. Sources differ on the ages of the suspects, with one reporting both men are in their 20s and another reporting both are in their 30s. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for counter terrorism policing, said the arrests were the product of a sustained investigation. "This has been a long-running proactive investigation which has led to the disruption of what we believe to be a plot to target the Jewish community in the Manchester area," Evans said. She added that police were "acutely aware" the news would cause concern for the Jewish community and the wider public during the High Holiday period.
