Trump warns data center opposition risks US economic decline

Published 31 August 2026

President Donald Trump on Monday warned that communities rejecting data center construction risk economic decline and ceding technological leadership to China, framing the facilities as essential to national prosperity and the global artificial intelligence race. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that the only reason communities should oppose data centers is "if they want to end up being backwards and poor," urging them to "let Data Reign" to secure lower taxes and job growth. The president's comments come as opposition to data centers has intensified across the United States, becoming a contentious issue ahead of the November midterm elections.
