Trump Threatens 50% Tariff on Canadian Vehicles Amid Trade Dispute

Published 26 August 2026

President Donald Trump threatened on August 24 to impose a 50 percent tariff on all vehicles, auto parts, and trucks imported from Canada, effective January 1, 2027. The announcement came after trade negotiations between the United States and Canada collapsed the previous week, escalating a trade dispute that industry experts warn will severely disrupt the deeply integrated North American automotive supply chain and harm automakers in both countries. The proposed tariffs would double the current 25 percent levy on Canadian-made cars and light trucks. Negotiations had broken down over several points, including whether tariff relief would apply to medium or heavy-duty trucks.
