Trump Says Putin Agreed to Release Russian Diesel

Published 9 October 2026

President Donald Trump said Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to release millions of tons of diesel for the American and global markets, while the U.S. Treasury announced a temporary license permitting Russian diesel supply to the global market. The promised deliveries have not been independently confirmed, and the announcement does not establish that fuel has shipped or will reach U.S. buyers. Trump described an initial supply of more than 300,000 tons immediately, followed by 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons thereafter. He said Russia would provide a further 3 million tons within a short time, conditional on the condition of its diesel refineries. The schedule and agreement were set out in Trump’s Truth Social post after a conversation with Putin; the supplied reports include no confirmation from the Kremlin of the terms. The Treasury’s temporary general license allows Russian diesel to be supplied to the global market. It is a regulatory authorization, not confirmation of a delivery or a U.S. purchase. The White House had not clarified who would pay for the fuel or when it would become available to buyers.
