Trump says administration is considering FBI inquiry into Wells death
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the administration is looking into whether the FBI should investigate the death of Nolan Wells, but he did not announce that a new federal probe had been opened. Asked at the White House whether he planned to ask the FBI to conduct an independent investigation, Trump replied, “We’re looking at that.” His remarks came after Wells’s family and attorney Ben Crump called for federal involvement following a grand jury’s decision not to indict anyone in the case. Wells, 18, went missing during a Fourth of July boating trip with friends to Horn Island, off Mississippi’s coast. His body was found on the island two days later. Wells was a student and football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College. The Jackson County grand jury found no basis to bring charges and determined that Wells’s death was consistent with drowning, according to accounts of its decision. Local authorities have not alleged foul play. The decision did not resolve disputes about the cause of death or the investigation. The family has challenged the drowning finding.
