Trump Orders Federal Diesel Tax Deferral, Broader Dyed-Fuel Use

Published 6 October 2026

President Donald Trump signed an executive order at a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on Monday, October 5, directing the federal government to expand highway use of dyed diesel and defer federal excise taxes on the fuel. The measure is intended to ease diesel costs for users including farmers and truckers, but its practical reach depends on rules that have not yet been fully detailed. Dyed diesel is the same fuel as ordinary diesel, colored red to distinguish fuel generally reserved for off-road equipment from fuel subject to highway taxes. Trump said the order would waive the off-road restriction and allow people to buy the fuel for broader use. A White House fact sheet described a temporary deferral of federal excise tax on highway use through the end of 2026 and said officials would explore eliminating the deferred tax obligation. The order text itself had not been released in one account, leaving eligibility and enforcement details uncertain. The fact sheet also directed federal officials to encourage states to adopt similar policies and to ensure access in high-demand areas.
