Trump Demands Lowest Rates as Fed Meets Amid Hike Expectations

Published 14 September 2026

President Donald Trump publicly called for the United States to have the lowest interest rates in the world, directly challenging the Federal Reserve ahead of its policy meeting scheduled for September 15-16, 2026. Speaking to reporters at the Irish Open golf tournament in Doonbeg, Ireland, on September 13, Trump stated, "We should be paying the lowest interest rate in the world, regardless of their formulas." His remarks come just days after the Labor Department released consumer price data for August, which showed a larger-than-expected increase. That inflation report reinforced market expectations that the Federal Reserve, under Chair Kevin Warsh, will raise borrowing costs for the first time in three years. Traders have priced in an 86% chance of a rate hike at the upcoming meeting. The current federal funds rate target range is 3.50% to 3.75%. Trump has previously advocated for rates as low as 1% or below, a reduction of more than 250 basis points. He argued that high interest rates disadvantage the U.S. internationally and increase the cost of servicing the national debt, which now exceeds $39 trillion.
