Trump announces potash deal talks with Belarus to rival Canada

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States is negotiating a "massive Deal" to purchase potash from Belarus, aiming to reduce American dependence on Canadian imports and secure lower prices for farmers. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated the Belarusian fertilizer would cost "substantially less" than current Canadian supplies, calling it "very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers." The announcement comes as the U.S. and Canada remain engaged in an escalating trade dispute involving tit-for-tat tariffs. Potash is a potassium-rich salt essential for fertilizer production, and the U.S. relies heavily on imports to meet agricultural demand. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture data, the nation imported roughly 13 million tons of potash in 2025, with nearly 90 percent coming from Canada. Canada is the world's largest potash exporter, holding over 39 percent of global exports and the largest reserves. However, significant logistical and contractual challenges cast doubt on the feasibility of a large-scale deal with Belarus.
