Trump and Rubio Weigh Guilfoyle’s Removal as Ambassador

Published 12 October 2026

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are weighing whether to remove Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador to Greece, according to a senior U.S. official, but no decision or departure has been confirmed. The official said they would likely decide what action to take during the week after the October 12 Columbus Day holiday. The deliberations follow reports alleging improper conduct before and during Guilfoyle’s time in Athens. The allegations include that she asked Republican donor Eric Deters to pay a $100,000 American Express bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing, while offering access to senior administration officials. Deters said he did not make the payment, and Guilfoyle’s lawyer, Jesse Binnall, disputed the authenticity of the messages cited in reports about the alleged request. Binnall has said Guilfoyle did nothing wrong. Other reports have alleged that Guilfoyle promoted the interests of a Greek construction and energy company and allowed its lobbyist to join private diplomatic meetings. One account said she suggested at a dinner that the United States could undermine or replace the Greek government.
