Toyota Recalls 10,000 C-HR EVs for Power Loss Risk

Toyota is recalling approximately 10,000 of its 2026 C-HR electric vehicles in North America due to a software defect that could lead to a sudden loss of motive power. The issue arises when the vehicle's regenerative braking system, designed to recapture energy, overcharges the traction battery when its charge level is already high. This overcharge condition can trigger a protective shutdown of the electric-drive system, resulting in a loss of power while driving. According to the automaker, this loss of power, particularly at higher speeds, increases the risk of a crash. The recall specifically targets a software bug within the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit, rather than a fault in the battery cells or motors themselves. Toyota has stated that dealers will perform a free software update to correct the issue. Owners are expected to receive notification letters by early November, though dealers can perform the update sooner for those who schedule an appointment. Approximately 1,310 of the affected vehicles are located in Canada, according to Toyota Canada.
