Tom Cruise’s Digger opens far below break-even estimate
Tom Cruise’s film Digger opened to about $8 million domestically and had grossed roughly $35 million worldwide by around 10 days after its October 2 release, well below an estimated $350 million break-even threshold. The box-office figures have prompted forecasts of a substantial loss, though the film’s final theatrical results are not yet known. The domestic opening figure was reported by Box Office Mojo. Another report put Digger’s opening-weekend worldwide gross at $25 million, while subsequent coverage cited a worldwide total of $35.3 million 10 days after release. Those figures describe different points in the film’s run. A report also said the film opened internationally with $12 million across 73 markets. The estimated production budget was about $180 million. One account said it had risen from an initial $125 million and that Warner Bros. spent a further $100 million on global marketing. Variety’s cited estimate was that the film needed about $350 million worldwide to break even, in part because theaters retain a share of ticket sales. Those figures are industry estimates, not a final accounting of the studio’s costs or returns.
