Three Workers Killed as Church Roof Collapses in Vellore

Published 11 September 2026

Three workers were killed and several others injured when the roof and scaffolding of an under-construction Church of South India church collapsed near Katpadi in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district on Thursday, September 10, 2026, officials said. The collapse occurred at Mandai Krishnapuram, a village roughly 10 km from Katpadi, while labourers were pouring concrete for the roof slab. A police officer said the 20-foot steel scaffolding and support framework gave way suddenly, trapping workers under heavy concrete debris and rubble. Reports differed on the exact time, with accounts placing the incident between roughly 3:45 pm and 4:30 pm. Rescue operations continued into the evening and night. Personnel from Thiruvalam police station and Katpadi Fire and Rescue Services were joined by a team from the National Disaster Response Force based at Arakkonam, along with district administration officials. Ten workers were initially rescued, and one person who remained trapped was later located and pulled out, according to officials.
