Texas voting groups sue over registration backlog

Published 15 October 2026

The League of Women Voters of Texas and MOVE Texas Civic Fund have sued Texas officials, alleging that a backlog of nearly 600,000 voter-registration records violated a 2021 settlement requiring an online registration process through the Department of Public Safety’s website. The lawsuit, filed in Bexar County, asks a judge to require the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Secretary of State’s Office to maintain a functioning registration process, provide records documenting failures and show proof of compliance within a month. The groups say technical problems delayed registrations and updates for months, leaving some voters’ records unprocessed ahead of the November 3 election. The records were sent to counties shortly before the election, according to the lawsuit and statements reported by officials. The filing says Harris County received about 75,000 late records and Dallas County about 68,000. The larger statewide estimate is presented in the lawsuit and official accounts; the supplied information does not include an independent statewide audit.
