Teen regains consciousness in coffin during Guatemala wake

Published 13 October 2026

Yuleidy Ixcotoyac, a 15-year-old girl in Guatemala, regained consciousness inside a coffin during her family’s wake on October 10, after her father believed she had died following a collapse. Her family’s account describes the incident, but no medical examination confirming her death or explaining her collapse and recovery has been reported. Yuleidy’s father, Abraham Ixcotoyac, said she lost consciousness while he was driving her toward a medical centre. He pulled over and checked her breathing and pulse, saying he could detect neither and concluded that she had died. She did not reach the medical centre. The family returned home with a coffin and began a wake without a doctor examining her or issuing a death certificate. At the wake, Yuleidy’s mother, Lesvia Ríos, said she noticed movement while crying beside the coffin. Yuleidy then sat up, according to her mother’s account. Relatives helped her out and offered her water. Footage described as showing the moment circulated online. Yuleidy later said she had felt severe pain and a heavy sensation in her chest before blacking out.
