Brazil orders Eduardo Bolsonaro to begin prison sentence

Published 9 October 2026

Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Eduardo Bolsonaro to begin serving a four-year, two-month prison sentence, issued an arrest warrant and canceled his Brazilian passports. Justice Alexandre de Moraes directed federal police to arrest Bolsonaro if he returns to Brazil. The enforcement order, reported on October 8, follows a June conviction by the court’s First Panel for coercion in judicial proceedings. The conviction became final on October 3, according to reports citing Brazilian media. The panel ruled unanimously, and the sentence was initially set to be served under a semiopen regime. The case concerned Bolsonaro’s efforts to persuade U.S. officials to impose sanctions on Brazilian authorities and tariffs on Brazilian exports during the trial of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, for an attempted coup. The court concluded that he sought to pressure justices and interfere in the proceedings. Eduardo Bolsonaro has lived in the United States since 2025 and holds a U.S. green card, according to reports. The Supreme Court’s order tells federal police to execute the warrant if he returns to Brazil.
