Teacher on Trial for Sex With Teen Pupil

Published 5 September 2026

A former physical education teacher is on trial accused of having sex with a 16-year-old pupil at her home while they watched Wimbledon. Bronwen James, 30, faces four counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust. Prosecutors allege that James developed a flirtatious relationship with the student through Snapchat while she was teaching at Bitterne Park School in Southampton. The court heard that the pupil initially sought to add James on Snapchat, a request she first refused but later accepted. Their messages allegedly became flirtatious, leading to meetings. According to the prosecution, James and the pupil met at Weston Shore, where they kissed in a car. It is further alleged that James later picked up the teenager and took him to her house. While watching television, including the Wimbledon tennis championships, they allegedly kissed and touched before engaging in sexual activity. Prosecutors stated that the pair had sex four times without protection. The pupil told the court that he believed the relationship was "great" at the time and that he felt overwhelmed, but looking back, he recognized it was wrong.
