Taiwan Plans Alaska LNG Purchases, With Terms Still Pending
Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs says the state energy company CPC Corporation plans to buy 6 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually from the proposed Alaska LNG project and could invest up to $4.4 billion. The plan remains subject to negotiations and commercial contracts, while U.S. President Donald Trump has described the arrangement as a 30% purchase for 20 years. Trump made that claim at a rally in Alaska on Tuesday, October 13. He said Taiwan had agreed to buy 30% of the gas coming from the pipeline for the next 20 years and invest $4.4 billion, calling the commitment a major boost for the project. Taiwan’s ministry has not confirmed those specific terms in its public description. The ministry said CPC signed a letter of intent in March 2025 and that the two sides had made progress after more than a year of discussions and evaluation. Its account describes an annual purchase of 6 million metric tons and possible participation in project development, with investment capped at $4.4 billion. It says investment arrangements, ownership shares and other terms will be determined through further negotiations and commercial-contract procedures.
