Switch 2 Update Adds Docked VRR Support

Nintendo released firmware update 23.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 10, 2026, adding variable refresh rate support when the console is docked and connected to a television, a feature the company had promised before launch and later confirmed would not be available at release. According to the patch notes, VRR output is now supported in TV mode, and when both the software and the television support it, the video output refresh rate matches the game's processing speed. A dock firmware update is required to enable the feature, along with a new VRR settings option in the display section of the console menu. VRR technology synchronizes a display's refresh rate with the console's frame output, reducing screen tearing and stuttering. The feature was already available on the Switch 2's handheld screen, as well as on competing platforms including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Nintendo had announced docked VRR before the Switch 2 launched, then removed the information from its website and confirmed the feature would be handheld-only.
