Switch 2 Update 23.0.0 Adds VRR in TV Mode

Published 10 September 2026

Nintendo released system update 23.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 10, 2026, rolling out what multiple reports describe as the console's most substantial firmware update since its launch. The update is available globally and introduces a range of new features, headlined by variable refresh rate, or VRR, support in TV mode. VRR support had been uncertain for docked play, and its arrival was described as long anticipated. When both the software and the connected TV support VRR, the console can output at a refresh rate that dynamically matches the game's performance. Enabling the feature requires a separate Nintendo Switch 2 dock update, which can be completed through the System Settings menu, along with a compatible display connected via HDMI. According to one report, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is currently the only title supporting VRR in docked mode, though that list is expected to grow. The update also brings notable improvements to GameChat. The list of available chats now shows chats the user has previously joined, new chats can be started without inviting any friends, and a new option in the C Button menu allows the screen size to be changed during a chat.
