Strike Hits Liberian-Flagged Ship in Odesa Region

Published 3 October 2026

A Liberian-flagged cargo ship in Ukraine’s Odesa region was struck on October 3, killing one crew member, injuring three and prompting the evacuation of 13 others, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority said. The reports did not independently establish who carried out the strike or the circumstances in which the vessel was hit. The authority said the dead crew member was a motorman. The three injured sailors received medical assistance, according to one account, while 13 crew members were evacuated to safety. The vessel was described by Ukrainian officials as a civilian cargo ship. Authorities had not publicly identified the ship or specified which port in the wider Odesa region was affected, according to information available that day. Its cargo and the extent of damage were also not established in the reports. No independently verified evidence presented in the accounts established that the vessel had a military role. The casualty and evacuation figures, as well as the account of the attack, were attributed to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority. The supplied reports did not provide an independent assessment of the incident.
