Steve Smith monitored after helmet blow in Durban Test

Published 13 October 2026

Steve Smith is being monitored for a possible delayed concussion after an Anrich Nortje delivery struck his helmet during the first Test against South Africa in Durban. Smith passed an initial on-field assessment and continued batting, but did not take the field for South Africa’s fourth-innings chase on Monday, October 12. The incident occurred while Smith was batting in Australia’s second innings. He was hit on the helmet by a short delivery from Nortje, changed his helmet and was assessed by medical staff. He was cleared to continue and scored 27 before being dismissed by Simon Harmer. Australia later declared its innings, setting South Africa a target of 421. Smith’s absence from the field prompted further monitoring by Australia’s medical team. The reports do not establish that he has been diagnosed with a concussion or cleared to return. Australia’s account, as reported, was that Smith had not failed any further tests by stumps and was expected to be tested again Tuesday morning in Durban.
