Renshaw’s 190 lifts Australia to 390 in Durban Test
Matt Renshaw’s career-best 190 helped Australia recover from an early collapse and post 390 in its first innings against South Africa in the first Test in Durban. South Africa reached 27 for 1 at the close of the second day, trailing by 363 runs. Renshaw faced 397 balls and hit 21 fours and a six before being caught at slip off Simon Harmer. His innings was his second Test century, following his 184 against Pakistan in 2017, and his highest score in the format. Australia had been reduced to 124 for 6 when he anchored the recovery from No. 5. He shared an 86-run seventh-wicket stand with captain Pat Cummins, who scored 43. After Cummins and Mitchell Starc fell, Renshaw and Nathan Lyon added 134 for the ninth wicket. Lyon made 27 from 92 balls, helping Australia extend its total after South Africa had appeared poised to dismiss the lower order quickly. The Renshaw-Lyon partnership was reported as a record Australian ninth-wicket stand against South Africa or at Durban. The same 134-run total was also described as Australia’s second-highest ninth-wicket partnership in Test cricket, a broader category with a different record-holder.
