Star Wars Films Set for IMAX 70mm Release in 2027

Published 8 September 2026

Lucasfilm is set to make cinematic history in 2027 with the release of two major Star Wars films in the premium IMAX 70mm format. The original "Star Wars: A New Hope" will receive a 50th-anniversary re-release, marking its first-ever presentation in IMAX, while the new standalone film "Star Wars: Starfighter" will also debut in the format. "A New Hope" is scheduled for a special re-release on February 19, 2027, coinciding with its 50th anniversary. This restored version will be shown at select IMAX 70mm film locations, offering fans a chance to experience the film that launched the iconic saga on a grand scale. This marks the first time any Star Wars film has been presented in IMAX, whether digitally or on film. Following this, "Star Wars: Starfighter" is slated for release on May 28, 2027, during the 50th-anniversary weekend of the original "Star Wars" premiere. This new film was shot using IMAX-certified cameras and will be converted to IMAX 70mm film prints for its theatrical run in select locations. The movie is directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue whose past catches up with him, propelling him into a galaxy-spanning adventure.
