Solana Activates 200-Millisecond Mainnet Slots
Solana activated 200-millisecond slots on its mainnet on October 9, completing a staged upgrade that halves the network’s target slot time from its original 400 milliseconds. The change doubles the targeted frequency of block-production opportunities, but does not double the network’s overall processing capacity. The final step completed SIMD0525, a rollout that began in August with reductions to 350 milliseconds, followed by 300 and 250 milliseconds. With the new target, Solana aims for five block-production opportunities per second, compared with 2.5 under the original configuration. Anza, the developer behind Solana’s Agave validator client, confirmed the upgrade was complete. Developers reduced the computational budget available within each slot in proportion to the shorter interval. As a result, approximate execution capacity per second remains largely unchanged, even though blocks are produced more frequently. The upgrade is intended to make transaction updates arrive sooner for applications that rely on timely network information, including trading platforms and market makers.
