Scholes Would Accept Medal if City Title Reassigned

Published 4 October 2026

Paul Scholes said he would accept a retrospective Premier League winners medal if Manchester City’s 2011-12 title were reassigned, differing from former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney, who said he would not feel comfortable receiving one. Any change to the title remains hypothetical while City appeals findings that it breached financial rules. Scholes made his position known in an Instagram post responding to former teammates who had said they would not want medals if City’s trophies were taken away. He said he wanted his medal if it became available. His remarks followed Rooney’s comments on the Stick to United podcast that he did not believe Manchester United had done enough to win the 2011-12 league campaign. Rooney said United had been several points clear late in the season but had let the lead slip. He also said he would feel uncomfortable being treated as a title winner because City finished first. Rooney added that players might not have known about decisions made above them at the club and could be devastated if medals were removed. Manchester City and Manchester United finished the 2011-12 season level on points, with City taking the title on goal difference.
