Ring Introduces TAKE Encryption as New Default for User Privacy

Amazon's Ring announced on August 26, 2026, a new default encryption system called TAKE, short for Throw Away the Key Encryption, designed to limit the company's access to user video footage while preserving cloud-based smart features. The system will begin rolling out in phases starting in September and will eventually become the default setting for all Ring customers worldwide. Under the TAKE system, Ring cameras will generate unique, rotating encryption keys for recorded video. A temporary copy of each key is stored in a secure cloud enclave, allowing Ring to access the video only long enough to process active user features, such as Smart Alerts for people, packages, or vehicles.
