Red Sox Remove Roman Anthony From Wild Card Roster

Published 30 September 2026

The Boston Red Sox removed Roman Anthony from their Wild Card Series roster Wednesday after imaging showed additional damage to muscles in his right hand and wrist, ending the 22-year-old outfielder’s postseason availability before the American League Championship Series. Major League Baseball approved the substitution of infielder Curtis Mead, the team said. Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said the imaging, conducted in Boston on Wednesday morning, showed damage that was not present before. The team had not determined what treatment Anthony would need or whether he would require surgery, Tracy said. No recovery timeline was provided. Under MLB roster rules, Anthony cannot return before the ALCS if Boston advances. The roster change followed his early exit from Tuesday’s series opener against the New York Yankees, a 9-0 Red Sox loss. Anthony started as the designated hitter and leadoff batter, struck out in both at-bats and was replaced by pinch hitter Andruw Monasterio in the sixth inning after experiencing discomfort during checked swings. Anthony said Wednesday that his right hand had not fully recovered from the earlier injury.
