Rays sweep Yankees after Volpe homer call overturned

Published 8 October 2026

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 4-3 on October 7, 2026, sweeping their American League Division Series and ending New York’s season after replay overturned Anthony Volpe’s apparent tying home run because of spectator interference. The disputed play came in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Yankees trailing 4-2. Volpe drove a ball toward the left-field wall with George Lombard Jr. on first base. A spectator reached over the wall and touched the ball as Rays left fielder Victor Mesa Jr. tracked it. The initial home-run call was reviewed and overturned. MLB’s Replay Center said the ball would not have left the playing field and would not have been caught. Officials ruled spectator interference, awarded Volpe an RBI double and placed him at second base, with Lombard scoring to make it 4-3. The ruling meant the Yankees did not tie the game, but it did not end their chances to score. In the eighth, with a runner aboard and two outs, Tampa Bay reliever Kevin Kelly struck out pinch hitter Giancarlo Stanton. The Rays held their one-run lead to complete the three-game sweep.
