Rangers Say Shesterkin Will Miss Rest of Season
The New York Rangers announced Saturday that goaltender Igor Shesterkin will miss the remainder of the 2026-27 season because of a lower-body injury sustained against the Washington Capitals on Friday. The team’s announcement, reported October 10, did not specify a diagnosis or describe the damage beyond the injury designation. Shesterkin was hurt in the second period at Capital One Arena while trying to return to his crease. Accounts of the play say his right skate jammed against the goalpost as he slid across the net. He fell and remained on the ice while receiving attention, then was helped off without putting weight on his right leg. He did not return. The Rangers lost 3-1. Shesterkin had stopped 13 of 14 shots and left with the score tied 1-1. Dylan Garand entered in relief and stopped 11 of 12 shots. Washington took the lead late in the second period and added an empty-net goal. The season-ending status comes less than a day after the Rangers said Shesterkin would not return to the game because of a lower-body injury.
