Princess Diana's 'Revenge Dress' to be auctioned

Sotheby's is set to auction Princess Diana's iconic black Christina Stambolian dress, famously dubbed the "Revenge Dress," in New York on December 9. The strapless silk garment, estimated to fetch between $150,000 and $300,000, marks the first time the dress has been offered for sale in nearly 30 years. Diana wore the striking off-the-shoulder dress on June 29, 1994, to a fundraising dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The occasion coincided with a televised interview in which her estranged husband, Prince Charles, publicly acknowledged his infidelity. The dress quickly became a symbol of defiance and empowerment, giving rise to the term "revenge dressing" as shorthand for clothing chosen to project confidence and independence. Designed by the Greek couturier Christina Stambolian, the dress was reportedly a last-minute choice for the princess, who had initially considered it too daring. It featured an asymmetrical hemline and a train, which Diana accessorized with black heels, red nail polish, a clutch bag, and a statement choker made from a diamond and sapphire brooch gifted by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
