Poll: Majority of Americans oppose Trump tariffs and Lake America renaming

A new poll shows a majority of Americans oppose President Donald Trump's recent actions in an escalating dispute with Canada, including higher tariffs on Canadian goods and an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America." The ReutersIpsos survey, completed on August 30, found that 57 percent of respondents opposed the increased tariffs, while only 20 percent supported them. Opposition to the lake renaming was even stronger, with 63 percent against the change and just 14 percent in favor. The poll results reflect public sentiment amid a significant deterioration in relations between the two longtime allies and major trading partners. Trump announced additional tariffs on certain Canadian imports on July 20, and those duties took effect on August 22. The executive order directing the U.S. Department of the Interior to implement the name change for Lake Ontario was signed on August 27. Under the order, the lake will be referred to as "Lake America" in U.S. federal usage, though the designation does not control what Canada, international organizations, or other entities call the body of water, which has been known as Lake Ontario for more than 400 years.
