Police locate suspected camp after NYSC abductions

Published 4 October 2026

Police in Imo State said they had used drones to locate a suspected camp where prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted during a journey through the state may be held, but security agencies had delayed entering the site because intelligence indicated it was mined with improvised explosive devices. Police said 10 people had been rescued at the scene, while the number still missing was being verified. No supplied update confirms a further rescue. Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso said security personnel tracked the abductors into the bush and used drones on Friday, October 2, to identify a location. He said authorities were preparing to enter with heavy equipment, including bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers, to reduce the danger to the captives. The location and reported explosives have not been independently verified in the available accounts. The abduction took place on Thursday, October 1, when gunmen attacked two buses carrying prospective corps members along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Imo State. The passengers were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
